Overview

After completing their home extension, our clients were eager to reclaim their garden - an area that had been left neglected throughout the build. What was once a compacted patch of soil and construction debris has now been transformed into a calm, elegant garden retreat that feels like a natural continuation of their new living space.

Our goal was to create a design that balanced sophistication and comfort - a garden that would look beautiful throughout the year while providing distinct areas for relaxing and entertaining. Using timeless materials and layered planting, we shaped a space that feels warm, private, and inviting from every angle.

The Challenge

When we first visited, the site was still feeling the after-effects of major building work — uneven, compacted, and prone to poor drainage. Beneath the surface, layers of rubble and hardpan soil made it difficult for water to escape or for plants to thrive.

Heavily compacted ground that trapped water after rainfall
Lack of structure or usable areas following the house extension
The need for a timeless design that connected seamlessly with the property
Our Approach

We began by tackling the groundwork head-on. The soil was completely reworked - we excavated and removed debris before introducing free-draining aggregates and organic matter to bring life and balance back into the ground. This foundational work was crucial to ensure the new garden would remain healthy and functional in all seasons.

Once the ground was prepared, we focused on crafting a space that felt both refined and restorative. Egyptian limestone was chosen for the paving - a naturally characterful stone with soft beige and cream tones that complement the property’s architecture. Its subtle fossil markings catch the light beautifully, adding depth and warmth to the overall design.

We introduced two separate seating zones to give the clients flexibility - one positioned for morning coffee and the other designed for evening relaxation and entertaining. Around these spaces, we installed layered planting beds filled with a mix of texture, colour, and form to provide year-round interest. Horizontal slatted fencing framed the garden, adding both privacy and a contemporary edge, while a bullnosed raised patio edge provided the finishing touch - a small detail that adds a premium, tailored feel to the entire scheme.

The Result

The finished garden feels calm, cohesive, and effortlessly elegant - a tranquil space that flows beautifully from the interior of the home into the outdoors. What was once a lifeless, waterlogged patch has become a refined retreat full of warmth, structure, and natural charm.
