This garden began as a tired, lifeless space that didn’t reflect the family’s lifestyle or personality. Designed for a busy family of four, the goal was to create a garden that balanced playfulness and practicality - a place where the children could run, explore, and make memories, while the adults could relax, entertain, and enjoy warm summer evenings in style.
Although compact, the garden had plenty of potential. Our challenge was to unlock it - transforming the uneven levels and worn finishes into something functional, modern, and full of character.
The original garden felt disconnected and underused. Poor levels made the space difficult to navigate and limited how it could be enjoyed. The family wanted a design that catered to both generations:
The key challenge was finding a balance between durability, design flow, and a sense of calm — all within a modest footprint.
We started by regrading and levelling the garden, creating a flat, versatile layout that would work equally well for playtime and evening gatherings. Every square metre was carefully planned to maximise use and visual interest.
We introduced a porcelain patio as the central feature - durable, easy to maintain, and perfect for outdoor dining or lounging. Warm tones and clean lines provide a modern aesthetic, softened with natural planting that adds movement and colour through the seasons.
Lighting and decorative elements were positioned to make the garden feel inviting well into the evening, while low-maintenance materials mean the family can spend more time enjoying the space rather than maintaining it.
The finished garden is a perfect example of how thoughtful design can transform even the smallest space.
The space now feels cohesive, contemporary, and full of life - proving that no garden is too small to make a big impression.
