Designing with Purpose | A Family Garden for Connection and Creativity
When designing a garden, it’s about far more than just creating a pretty picture.
The finished image you see is simply the result of countless hours of thought, listening, and careful planning that happen long before a single line is drawn.
For this project, we worked closely with our clients to understand every nuance of their lifestyle and needs. The garden needed to be both beautiful and functional — a relaxing sanctuary for the grandparents while also being safe, accessible, and engaging for their grandchildren.
One of the clients uses breathing apparatus, so accessibility and comfort were at the heart of every design decision. Pathways, seating areas, and materials were all planned with ease of movement and safety in mind. At the same time, the couple’s love for family and teaching inspired us to design spaces that encourage education, creative play, and the joy of growing food. From raised beds for easy access to clearly visible play zones, every part of the garden connects visually and emotionally.
A key request was the sound of water, which can bring calm and life to any outdoor space. The challenge? The garden is completely flat. Rather than let this limit the design, we turned it into an opportunity for creativity — integrating the decking itself into the water feature. The plan includes a hidden reservoir beneath the decking, making it appear as though the water flows naturally from the side of the structure. It’s a striking yet subtle feature that adds depth, movement, and tranquillity to the space.
Our clients were absolutely over the moon with the finished design concept. The garden captures everything they hoped for — beauty, practicality, accessibility, and heart. We can’t wait to bring this one to life in 2026. Watch this space.
